Hey all, I've been squirrelling birthday/Christmas money for a new GPU to replace my 4 year old mid-range card and I've been sitting on that for a few months. But the 3.0 schedule release has somewhat kicked me into action :blush: I have the following specs: Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 14393) (14393.rs1_release_sec.170327-1835) System Manufacturer: Dell Inc. System Model: Inspiron 580 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.8GHz Memory: 8192MB RAM Available OS Memory: 8152MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 12 ATX3D AMD Radeon HD 7870 Graphics Card - Black (2GB GDDR5) But I have and largely have found the PU to be too choppy to play on even with the reduced settings and resolution dialled way back. I know there's a host of network and performance improvements coming in the initial 3.0 drop but given my card is now appearing on the "minimum spec" list for a lot of newer releases, I figure it's time for an upgrade anyway and I've dropped far too much cash on SC to pass up the opportunity to get into it properly when 3.0 hits :blush: I'm basically looking at maintaining as much of my rig and desktop display as much as possible for the next 4-6 years (I have two kids in nursery so disposable income is at a minimum). So I'm not planning on upgrading to 4k nor VR. If I can keep things ticking along without replacing the CPU and MoBo then that would be ideal - RAM upgrades may well be a Christmas present for this year but I think my MoBo would currently max out on 16GB. The AMD 480 8GB card - particularly - https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-RX-480-GAMING-8G/dp/B01JGQBMB4/ sort of fits my price point. I know there's a lot of contention between that and the 1060 6GB. I'm not 100% sold on the 480 but I figure 8GB might make the card "age" slightly better over the 6GB which is why it's edging towards my preference despite the lower heat output and power consumption of the 1060 - one of the reasons why I'm opting for the more expensive MSI card is based on the cooling being quite good as opposed to some of the other cheaper cards. With the gory background details done, my main questions are: Based on the info above, are my assumption reasonable and am I on the right track? More importantly, I've long held off any form of upgrade until we're nearer the release of SC - but would the 480 8GB give enough headroom to make the PU/Sq42 playable do we think? What is the average framerate people are hitting with either of those cards on the PU currently based on 1920x1080 resolution? Is it a solid 60fps or do the settings/resolution need to be dialled back a bit? That may help answer the first question above. I'm fairly convinced that the 7870 is probably end of life now. If No Man's Sky lists at as the minimum card needed then I can't see much hope on getting SC playable with it no matter what optimisations they do. But that said if the performance of those cards on the current PU are a bit "meh" based on currently experiences then it does point me towards the direction of being patient and waiting.
