https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/Radeon-Vega-Frontier-Edition-16GB-Air-Cooled-Review As I find myself reading the first part of this review, I am shocked. Even if drivers make up 10% of the performance, it lands far short of the speed bump over the Fury X as I projected it to be. That is, 30% faster. It looks like the best we are getting from AMD this generation is GTX 1070 equivalent. Or is it? There is a water-cooled version, that has a 375W TDP instead of 300 W. With a boost clock here of 1600 MHz listed, but instead only reaching ~1400 MHz, it would appear as if the chip is power throttling to keep itself within its 300W TDP. So AMD gave this card a boost clock it could not possibly reach. Brilliant. Regardless of what results the watercooled version turn in, that's pretty dumb. And so is the thermal throttling. Then I move on to the professional bench segment. Then I find myself asking, what the hell is this card even for? It REALLY doesn't seem like it's a gaming card, and this time one can say that more seriously than is often said with the Titan series. It is doing well compared to anything NVIDIA has to offer in the professional segment, especially considering its price. I think at the end of the day, I can answer myself for now by saying this is an early adopters release. Vega wasn't supposed to release this early, but they did it anyway to meet investors' expectations. The "Frontier Edition" should have emphasized that. I wish AMD didn't cloak the release with marketing language and just straight-up called it "Vega Early Adopters Release". However, they did not, so we are left wondering whether or not this is actually Vega or if it's some gimped early-to-the-slaughter Vega. Some folks in the comments there seem to be suggesting that Vega: FE has the "Tile-based Rasterizer" disabled, even though that is one of the key architectural differences between Vega and Fiji.
