Hello everyone! While browsing Amazon for Christmas gift ideas recently I saw something which I found interesting, a small pad of keyboard keys, just six of them, on a USB connected board. The idea of this device was to let you set a custom input, script, macro or whathaveyou to any of these keys with the intent of triggering what you set when that key is pressed. This is actually basically what a streamdeck or similar device does, sometimes called a "Macro Pad". Well out of curiosity I went ahead and ordered one of them, it arrived this morning, and I have to say I am seriously impressed with it! Despite having only six keys it is capable of storing up to 18 inputs (Default 6 then 12 more on modifier keys like "Hold Lalt" and "Hold Lctrl" for example) . The key caps are unmarked but there is an individually addressable RGB LED underneath each key, to which you can set colours and patterns to denote different inputs. As an example I have set Toggle Doors to a pulsing attention-getting red, since that's a dangerous function! Request landing is a randomly changing sequence of colours, not a gradient but instantly changing from colour to colour, it almost emulates a busy chat window in your periphery which seemed appropriate since it is a comms function. I have also set the windows gamebar shortcuts "Take screenshot" and "Toggle recording" to the pad, the screenshot button is unlit until pressed, at which it flashes a bright white that slowly fades away, like a flashbulb of a camera, and toggle recording is unlit unless recording is active, at which it is a solid red. The lights can be on, off, pulsing, "twinkling", fading in or out, and you can set all sorts of conditions like "all the time", "Only when pressed", "Toggles on press" etc. I am only using this device to send basic inputs to the game but it is possible to use it outside of games for some pretty complex stuff, it has its own scripting system for very complex macros and it also has a macro keypress recording function for setting basic ones. Overall it really very fully featured. Now these are generic Chinese made devices, there's no point telling you a specific brand or manufacturer to look for since only god knows where these are actually made but it is a relatively simple device so I'm not too worried about build quality. The software ("SayoDevice" executable which sets up a USB listener and hooks into the device through your browser) required to set the various settings of my specific controller (Other pads may use different software even if they look identical) is dodgy as hell at initial viewing but I've done what I can to ensure that it is safe for my use and happily it only needs running when you want to CHANGE bindings, not just use the device, since the device itself stores these binds it can be used on a computer that has never seen the software and it will retain all your custom settings. I myself have run the software from a secure container and allowed several security services to scan it and nothing was found, but there is always risk as you're aware. The software has a language option thankfully though it appears not completely translated, some words in some sub-menus were still chinese but all of it was straight-forward enough to guess at what they meant and figure it out through trial-and-error. So far I am actually tremendously impressed with this, considering just how cheap it was at only £18 inclusive of shipping (An elgato streamdeck mini, a similar 6 button device, is £70) I think this is a bit of a winner for anyone looking to get a cheap macropad device for those functions you'd like to move off of a keyboard or if your joysticks are simply too crowded. I don't have a photograph of it but here's an image I took from the sales page I used, it's a cute little thing! Anyway, like I said I saw this thing while shopping and figured I'd test it out and let you all know my results so far. If it breaks in a day or two I'll let you know!
