Chris Roberts did it again! His game sold another PC. Like in the good old days ... When I pledged for Star Citizen years ago I decided to not buy a new PC until Star Citizen would be finally released OR when I couldn't play the Beta any longer with enough FPS - what ever happens first. My old rig served me well for more than 10 years (Intel i7 920, 12 GB RAM, Radeon R9 270 - 2 GB VRAM, SSD). Even with its hardware limitations I was able to play SC in medium settings with 1650x1050 px. Despite the constant memory warning that the game would like to run on 8 GB free RAM - which I couldn't manage. :slightly_smiling_face: Then came alpha 3.7 and the caves. Oh my. The frame rate was unplayable ... I guess that the VRAM of just 2 GB was the main reason for the very laggy performance. So there I was. I needed a new rig! Finally. My thoughts: What would serve me another 10 years, will run SC smoothly in Full HD and wouldn't cost a fortune? I did some research and came across a detailed article by PC Games Hardware. They did some specific performance tests and comparisons with SC. Exactly what I was looking for! ( https://www.pcgameshardware.de/Star-Citizen-Spiel-3481/Specials/Star-Citizen-Historie-und-Benchmarks-1282844/ ) The results in a nutshell: for a video resolution up to 1920x1080 (Full HD) SC is CPU limited. Higher resolutions will limit the game by the GPU. Since I don't have space for a larger monitor than 24'' I'm fine with Full HD gaming. So I decided to get a fast CPU, but not the fastest GPU. The spare money I invested in more RAM, a fast SSD and a high quality PSU. Everything combined on a solid motherboard and in a large tower. After testing it now for a week it does its job! In ultra high settings I achieve 59 fps on average. Out of the box - nothing overclocked yet! And it's quite enjoyable! SC runs very smooth. Here are the specs - and I know that there are faster machines out there. But it works for me! CPU: Intel® Core™ i9-9900K Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S Mainboard: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero (WiFi) GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 2070 Super ROG Strix Advanced Gaming (8 GB VRAM) RAM: Corsair DIMM 32GB DDR4-3200 Kit (2x16 GB) SSD: Samsung 970 PRO 1 TB HDD: WD WD20EZRZ 2 TB DVD Drive: ASUS DRW-24D5MT PSU: Corsair HX850i (850 Watt; 80 PLUS Platinum) Tower: Fractal Design Define R6 USB-C Blackout TG The results in Alpha 3.7 according to the telemetry: GPU Score: 210 CPU Score: 182 Some people were saying that you can't run an Intel i9-9900K with air cooling. That's not true. Running SC for hours will increase temperature of the CPU to 45° Celsius. That's far below the maximum. Again, I haven't overclocked anything yet. There might be some limitations, but so far the Noctua NH-U14S cooling system is very impressive: relatively small, silent and effective.
