Hello, all. I am in the throes of spec-ing and building a new build based around an i7-8700k and ROG Hero X board. I am seriously confused. I used to build PCs for a living back in the day, but I am lost now. Any clarification on these points would be very much appreciated! Point 1: RAM Height I am wanting at least 3000MHz RAM, preferably 3200. I plan to air cool the system (I will not be overclocking the CPU) and am looking at the Noctua NH-D15 cooler. Noctua says that the max memory height with both fans mounted is 32mm. All of the RAM I have been able to locate on the net has a height of around 47mm. I am very dubious about leaving a fan off. Does anyone know of hi-perf RAM with a 32mm height? Or, alternately, a cooler with comparable performance to the D15 that provides 47mm plus clearance? Point 2: RAM Speed As I said, I am looking for at least 3000MHz RAM speed. This appears to require overclocking the RAM. Will the BIOS on this board allow me to set the RAM clock up without overclocking the CPU itself? Point 3: Board slots and Optane. I have ordered a 480GB Optane PCI-E drive for the system (C.R. told me I should, so I had no choice, right?). I will use an M2 drive for the O.S. This board has three expansion slots. One slot is a different color than the other two. When I look at the specs, the Expansion Slots section appears to me to be listing all of the slots the Z370 chip-set supports, rather than what the board actually has. The point is, I would like to preserve the option of adding a second video card/GPU in the future (after Vulcan is implemented, if not longer). So, are the slots on this board capable of supporting two video cards plus the Optane drive? That's about it for now. I am pretty much at a standstill until I can figure all or most of this out, so, again, any advice would be VERY much appreciated! Cheers, Cap
