Performance and FPS test Intel Optane vs crucial M.2 SSD Test of the performance of -Intel 280GB Optane 900p Serie AIC PCIe vs -1TB M.2 Crucial SSD My PC Intel:registered: Core:tm: i7-7800X RAM 32 GB DDR 4 (2666 MHz) Gigabyte Aorus Geforce GTX 1080 Ti 1TB M.2 Crucial SSD Intel 280GB Optane 900p Serie AIC PCIe 4TB HDD 1440p 144Hz 27inch main monitor And no, I won't test the HDD. I am using SSDs for 3 years now on my gaming rigs and so does any serious gamer :slightly_smiling_face:. I did a series of 10 tests with both SSDs: -time to menu -time from menu to olisar -FPS in Olisar at the ship spawning terminals -FPS was meassured by the in game command r_displayinfo 3 The data can be found here, it is sequential: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xXDeF_anNrsIel04MVmfDhXtD2bp8tzn40PHhFRayj0/edit?usp=sharing Observations and conclusions Hitting "launch game" to menu is very constant, no difference between optane and the crucial M.2 SSD. There is a lot of variation in the time between hitting "visit location" crusader until being in game. This depends a lot on the quality of the server and I guess how many players are on and how many big ships they spawned. There is a correlation between time to get into the game and FPS. If the time is short, FPS is good and vice versa (see my spreadsheet, data is sequential). Optane vs Crucial SSD It's really hard or close to impossible to draw any conclusion since there is so much variation in server quality (see my spreadsheet). I'm not doing a series of 100s of tests :slightly_smiling_face:. In my tests I had 3 lucky servers and 17 normal ones. I am well aware, that 10 tests each is far too low to draw a statistically valid conclusion. Still, I see only a very slight advantage of the optane in the time between hitting "visit location" until in game and maybe 1.5 FPS more in game (doubt it). So there is no significant difference. The optane certainly shines in performance benchmarks. Real world application (games) are a lot more complicated, though. My conclusion for now is: the optane is a nice piece of high tech hardware (and comes with a Raven), but IMO not really worth it for a game. My Advice Get a good NVMe SSD, e.g. Samsung EVO 960 If you really want the Raven and have no SSD yet, get the optane 280GB My Star Citizen channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQoCVhqSjMV1HRwzSvcplyA Edit: Benchmarks Optane http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/315555/INTEL-SSDPED1D280GA M.2 Crucial http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/SpeedTest/182535/Crucial-CT1050MX300SSD4
