This isn't related specifically to Star Citizen, but I figure this is a good place to ask. I'm running out of free USB ports on my motherboard, and I'm looking for the best way to add more ports. As far as I can tell, there are 2 options: a PCI card with extra ports, or a USB hub. I prefer to avoid adding a PCI card unless that option offers better performance than a USB hub. My main concern with gaming peripherals plugged to a USB hub is latency. I would use a self-powered USB 3.0 hub, but I'm wondering if this would provide enough bandwidth to use a joystick, throttle, keyboard, mouse, rudder pedals, steering wheel, TrackIR, webcam, microphone headset, printer, game controller, etc. all at once? I read that a USB 3.0 port has a bandwidth of 5 Gbits/s, but I have no idea how much bandwidth each of the previously-mentioned peripherals requires when in use. I really want to avoid any loss of performance with my peripherals while gaming, so I'm wondering which ones could be plugged together to a hub, and which ones should be plugged to their own port in the motherboard. I'm also concerned about how many devices a USB hub could power simultaneously, since some (all?) peripherals draw power directly from the computer. And of course, I realize that I won't use all the devices above at the exact same time. Obviously, with only 2 hands, you can't provide input on a joystick, keyboard, mouse, steering wheel and gaming controller at the exact same moment. But I could provide input at the same time on the joystick, keyboard and rudder pedals, all while the TrackIR, webcam and headset are running. Does anyone have knowledge or experience with this? I can't find any articles online that discuss USB hubs in so much depth.
