Disclaimer: This is not an SC specific post, just something I see happening in the future in the gaming industry. And obviously quite excited about. I thought I'd post here about it since SC players are quite tech savy in general. A lot of games have scripted "chat" that you can have with NPCs, and this is intermingled with the side-quests and quests. In some games your reputation plays a role in what the NPCs will and won't say to you or how they react to what you "say". Enter ChatGPT and other similar NL processors. What if every NPC had a back story and some knowledge, and in adition remember the previous interactions, and is able to generate good sentences like we see with ChatGPT "talking". In adition to this, the NPCs may learn about news worthy events in the game world, and talk about that. What I imagine is some very real feeling NPCs that you can talk to about stuff, while they can also give you missions or contracts. Probably the biggest blocker to just adding this to lots of games today is the cost. It takes a lot of processing, memory and storage to run a general purpose NL. I've not looked at all at what is needed to build a non General purpose NL. I imagine if each charater had more limited knowledge and just general knowledge that would be much more achievable than ChatGPT that seemingly knows everything that is on the internet (And can't distinguish between wrong and right) Anyways processing power of consumer CPUs keeps on going up so I do think it will eventually be viable, it is just a question of when. What are your thoughts on this? P.S: Somebody made a mod for skyrim, but I don't own the game so I have no tried it yet: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/15vej9k/every_single_skyrim_npc_ai_powered_with_chatgpt/
