Like many others, I have been following recent launches and advancements in rocket technology over the last decade. I am fascinated by the new space race that is developing between the US and China and the renewed interest in space exploration brought about by people like Elon. One thing that I do not understand is why there is no project to develop a large spaceship for the purposes of colonising the Moon or Mars etc. We have 'tiny' capsules for taking crew and supplies up and larger pods for carrying satellites but no large ship to carry thousands of tonnes of equipment and hundreds of crew to colonise new destinations. The Space X Starship is the closest thing potentially and the most ambitions project yet but you would still need to send potentially hundreds of them to Mars. Would it not make a lot more sense to use these heavy cargo rockets to get the building materials into space to work on a shipyard of sorts and then work on a large science / colonisation vessel that's dimensions are not limited on what you can fit on a rocket and a weight that isn't limited to what you can push out of earths gravity? It could be fully stocked in orbit then fly back and forth between planets for decades to come.
