Everyone with Windows 7/8.1 has probably become aware that Windows 7/8.1 is no longer receiving updates because its extended support period has ended (Businesses can buy further win7 support until (Correction, thanks @Angri its 2022, I posted 2024) I believe and it gets more expensive as time goes on). Point one: Due to CIG having to keep up with tech to support new things on their own network as well as they cant sustain Windows 7/8.1 without introducing vulnerabilities (Even one gives a IT technician a $1,000,000,000 heart attack). From a business standpoint they cant really continue to support it for much longer to keep themselves safe as well as move on and remove probably hundreds of workarounds and such for Windows 7/8.1. At this point its probably dragging some things down. Point two: With Gen12 being added in in 3.14, Vulkan will technically be added but not enabled and then enabled at a later date. Although Vulkan supports Windows 7/8.1, neither of them will get updates to Vulkan since they are delivered by Windows Update and this will probably edge the Khronos Group closer to the cliff edge of cutting support greatly. Personally, I have seen instances where games package Vulkan with the game but I only saw this at the beginning before Vulkan reached v1 and, even though CIG might be able to do this, it would add an extreme burden onto testing and such and introduce a limiting factor - they cannot update Vulkan anymore if its support gets cut from Windows 7/8.1 and people are still demanding support for Windows 7/8.1. Point three: Vulkan introduces A LOT of features like Ray-Tracing and Mesh Shading BUT they are specific to the latest operating systems and arent available on Windows 7/8.1, or at least not 100%. Mesh Shading is a killer for Windows 7/8.1 but is also the holy grail for Star Citizen's performance so, thats all but certain a support cut-off. Conclusion: Please stop asking for support for ancient operating systems and hardware. You know what game you are playing right? Its designed for the next-gen hardware and software. UPDATE YOUR SYSTEMS ALREADY - THERE ARE NO EXCUSES (And many false ones have been made like "Will my Windows 7 apps still work on Windows 10" - WINDOWS HAS HAD A BACK COMPAT SYSTEM FOR OVER A DECADE!) All-in-All. If you are asking for Windows 7/8.1 support. That its your own problem I'm afraid. As was the AVX stuff which happened in the last year. Quite disturbing tbh.
