Can't wait to see Dyson's electric car and the ideas you might bring to the topic. Batteries Batteries are getting better and cheaper. Bloomberg predicts the cost of lithium ion batteries will drop to $100/kwh by 2026, currently it’s just over $400/kwh for car manufacturers now and $1k/kwh for “consumer” AC coupled backup systems (Enphase’s 1 kwh AC pack is $3k). There’s also a lot of work on new technologies to decrease price and increase power density. What’s crazy is the impact of this My wife now has almost 3,000 miles on her gas/electric hybrid car, she’s used 10 gallons of gas; just ten gallons. In fact, I’m bugging her to switch off the electric and just burn gas so the gas in the tank doesn’t get to old (she last bought gas in February, most of those gas-miles were early on). What happens when everyone is driving electric hybrid cars? How does that affect the number of gas stations in a city? What does it mean for the price of gas and employment? What does it do to the middle east and world stability? If most cars are replaced in 8 years and the cost of electric hybrids continue to fall then most of this could start to spiral down within a decade. It took horses around 13 years to be replaced by the tipping point of the automobile and all of the industry around horses also disappeared after thousands of years of stability. Not to sound gloomy, it was after all replaced by an even bigger industry, that is stables became car dealerships, garages, gas stations, parking lots, etc. The Grid Solar is past the tipping point where it’s cheaper to go solar than to buy from the grid. That’s why they have positive pay-back periods. But there’s no sun at night so folks need the grid since the cost of batteries is too high for a positive payback. Most shoot for net-zero, that is the daytime solar accumulation drives the meter far enough backwards to cover the full day’s usage. So grid-tied owners can’t currently turn off the grid (it’s their battery so to speak). But what happens to the grid when batteries are cheap? Some predictions say most will go solar (predictions are solar will be cheaper than grid transmission costs, let alone fuel costs) and that's going to be a huge disruption to thousands of core industries that have been stable for over a hundred years.
