I mean, mechanically and gameplay-wise. Not talking about lore/explanation. The best way I can imagine it; Ships have capacitors which provide energy (Rather than altitude/gravity/velocity) Energy can be spent to accelerate To regain energy you decelerate, gaining energy proportionate to your reduced velocity IE: You must be going fast to regain significant amounts of energy. Does the idea, fundamentally of "ww2 dogfighting in space" even work? Just from a mechanical perspective? Thinking on it though, slowing down to charge energy depending on the efficiency of it, could be used tactically and actually make something more interesting than a standard dogfighting game. To try to explain what I'm thinking clearly, we have Pilot, Aggressor, Boosting (using energy to go faster) and braking (Slowing down to gain energy. Let's say Pilot is being chased by aggressor. Pilot boosts to speed up, forcing aggressor to do the same. Then Pilot initiates a barrel roll while applying brake to recharge his energy and fall behind aggressor. Pilot, already predicting aggressor will try to do the same, decouples and uses his energy to move laterally, still tracking aggressor. This use of energy for lateral movement reduces Pilot's velocity, and so potential energy from braking. Aggressor brakes hard to build an excess of energy, decouples, picks a different direction and boosts away. Pilot turns and boosts after him, but because his velocity was lower he gets less boost, so the Aggressor still has a lead, but the roles have now completely reversed. Would it be fun? Better than what we have? I dunno. Maybe someone has already done this. Would be really arcadey.
