The most switch-friendly distro seems to be Zorin, but every damn distro I found, in relation to my desire, only offers the new Windows XP/7 style start menu and stuff. But hell, even on Windows 7 I can install ClassicShell and got a lean and fast start menu without unnecessary visual and structural baggage. Just one row of titled icons, some standard, some added by me. Is there a way to get that on Linux? (ideally fully customizable, i.e. beyond Windows-level) It's kinda ridiculous that an oldschool preference would be such a barrier for me to consider Linux. As a side note, I find the most appalling thing about Linux's GUI is that in the year 2020 it still doesn't have full drag&drop functionality on the level of Windows. AFAIK you still cannot just drag stuff into a start menu. (Although admittedly that stuff might also be wonky on Windows sometimes, but at least it mostly works.) Generally there seem to be some behavioral peculiarities/annoyances that are hardcoded into Linux, regardless of what GUI you use. (I remember some usability issues with mouse clicks on menus and their open/close behavior.) EDIT: Still waiting for people who know what I am talking about.
