I will start by saying that I am not an absolutist. I think that the rights and wrongs of things happen by consensus in many cases. I also think that the solutions to many problems come from people being empowered to repel aggression themselves. Point of fact, not all aggression is in good fun. Assuming that peoples aggressive behavior, is just in good fun and not meant for more nefarious reasons is naïve. Thinking that this can be universally policed is also naïve. Now I am not going to go into the Sociological Studies that speak of the good and ills of Groupthink and Tribalism. (There is a lost of good information out there, for those who want to read about it.) However, what I will say is that generally communities rely on consensus to determine good and bad for the collective and are willing to defend that. The most effective method is for the individual to be empowered to deal with the consequence of their local responsibility. People tend to choose to use power in the way they see it benefitting the collective. Especially, when they value and respect the collective itself. This brings me to my point. Games often have the issue of creating the lone wolf and maverick ego concept. They push toward an unhealthy Hero Complex or they promote a Dominance persona. The problem is that this is counter to the supposed shared space environments they claim to want for players. Players come to environment with their baggage. There is no viable way to universally monitor and control the consequence of impulsive decisions that they make. There are ways to mitigate it. The best way is to empower the collective to be able to address and deal with these kind of impulsive behaviors. This means the ability to deal out direct consequence for direct action. Basically, the rights to self defense is the universal best way for a group to repel and remove the people who want to disrupt the will of the collective. When you have a situation where the environment does not reflect this behavior pattern. You have created an environment that fosters and sanctions exploitation. The environment constrains the general will of the population and makes them susceptible to being exploited and abused. This problem exists in SC. There are a great many things, rejected by the majority, being forcibly normalized at the cost of community. Basically, the anti-social people with aggressive motives feel more welcome and represented than those who would seek community. This has consequences for the game and the general nature of what kind of community it has. Something to think about.
