The first episode of the 2nd season has been released. Outside of the US and Canda it is available on Netflix as far as I know. For those who have watched it, what are your impressions so far? Some of my general rambling about what the 2nd season does right away in the 1st episode: I think they're still putting too much emphasis on action scenes with lots of CGI and not enough on actual plot development between characters. Objectively the special effects are great, but I am one of those people who can't get excited any more by this. Recent movies have bombarded us (me) with these scenes to often that they've become less and less interesting. It just feels cheesy to see the 200th equivalent of a canyon or asteroid thicket f(l)ight scene. In my opinion it fails to incite drama and therefore adds little to the actual story they are trying to tell. What is left is a lot of money that is wasted on eye-candy. Don't get me wrong, the old Treks also had their weird and cheesy action scenes. But those usually still involved a lot of human acting. In the past they probably did it for pragmatic reasons since special effects were expensive and the large amount of episodes they had to put out for every season certainly constrained their budget for every individual episode. This was one of the main reason they used transporters to move from place to place instead of producing shuttle scenes. With the budget they have now, this is no longer an issue and transporting is replaced by 'shuttle scenes', which of course are often utilized as action scenes with plenty of special effects and can be around 5 minutes long. The old Treks filled these spaces with scenes of human interaction or similar things. I believe that this forced the writers to come up with some actual plot that contributed to the story of an episode, which helped them to create a rather complex story (at least it was possible).
