One big thing about Star Trek back then was how it defied/challenged existing social norms, with women's lib being one big topic. Now I also know that was inherently difficult for Roddenberry to sell to the network, but that he succeeded quite well. But what I don't get is why the catchphrase contains "no man". Wasn't even back then "no one" a perfectly legit and inconspicuous wording with no potential to ring establishment alarm bells? I can't quite imagine an exec telling Roddenberry "That line there, it HAS to say MAN.". I always found it odd to find that explicit wording in a show with such a rebellious nature. I can only assume it was in the context of glorifying the human race. (Since there was/is definitely a portion of prometheusean(?) spirit in Trek, hah.)
