Several people have verified everything I am about to say. For my part, I've verified what I can. 1. The launcher will not perform its verification task on files packed in the Data.p4k archive. 2. The launcher will not selectively acquire missing files if non-corrupted files in the Data.p4k are unpacked. 3. The Data.p4k has zero fault tolerance during download, and corrupts easily, even on high end Internet connections. 4. The only solution is to repeatedly download 45GB until a non-corrupt archive is acquired purely by luck. 5. This problem occurs even when every troubleshooting step on CIG's related support page has been exhausted. Here's why this is a problem: 1. It puts unnecessary strain on CIG's patch servers, and runs up CIG's bandwidth costs, as backers repeat the large download over and over again. 2. It prevents testing by excluding backers during these repeated downloads. 3. It discourages community participation and further pledging by keeping backers out of the alpha game. 4. It reduces further pledging by encouraging backers to divert funds toward attempted upgrades -- that will likely make no difference. 5. It runs up some backers' bills, as the download is repeated. 6. As the project progresses, and the game's disk footprint grows, this will become a worse problem. None of these problems are necessary. An ideal solution would be for the launcher to scan for corrupted files in the archive, and flag only those to be downloaded. An alternative would be for backers to unpack the archive, and the launcher could acquire only whatever does not match a broader, more inclusive manifest (for both patching and to correct for corruption). A third solution would be for the game to log corrupted files when they fail to decompress (this is already done!) and the launcher could then reacquire those files. Either of these solutions would lower CIG's bills, encourage more revenue, and help maximize game testing and community participation. Later, having unpacked files could improve game performance by eliminating the need to decompress them on the fly. Some of this information contradicts verified incorrect information on the support page regarding Data.p4k. Namely, the launcher does not verify the files in the archive at all, full stop. And the problems listed are not the only causes of corruption. ANY network issue whatsoever -- even a single bad packet -- will corrupt the entire 45GB download. Bad packets have been with us since the Internet was invented, and we will never be completely rid of them because that would require perfect systems from the server, all the way through to our machines at home. Forcing us to throw away a 45GB download because one byte gets corrupted makes no sense whatsoever. These things considered, may we please have a CIG acknowledgement of this problem, and some kind of solution? There are FAR more backers experiencing this problem than it seems on the surface. This problem has been with us since 3.0. We have been quite patient with it.
