Ship designers, can we please try a significantly reduced MAV and retro thruster power/acceleration iteration please? As has been discussed, JP's programmed simulation is sufficient to give much more interesting flight gameplay than we currently have. So (IMHO to the best of my knowledge) we are not really waiting for missing functions to be programmed (though there are certainly more to come, especially in atmo). If I understand things rightly, a well-designed simulation is underlying the current feeling of flight, but a flight auto-setup function gives thrusters the power necessary to do everything the designers ask a ship to be capable of, even in multiple directions at once. IFCS seems tuned to have the capacity to completely and perfectly counter itself in every direction. What I am suggesting is a reduction to all MAV and retro capability values by 30-60%. Pick one percentage, apply it across the board. Let us test it. (This could probably be done with a few lines of code within the game that simply applied the reduction to all ships across the board... perhaps not even requiring anyone to change any ship values individually??) This means if a ship MAV or retro is capable of 9gs, it would be reduced to between 3-6gs depending on the percentage picked to test (one percentage applied across all ships so balance is maintained for the initial test). Later, if the test is well received, and if large ships need to have more powerful MAVS so they are not complete slugs, large ship MAVS could be increased with the explanation that bigger ships are simply capable of being outfitted with bigger and more powerful MAVS due to their massive size and space to carry the added hardware. But let us try the across-the-board cut first please. Will it help make hitting targets easier? Maybe... Will it make strategic maneuvering more important? Maybe... Will it make flight boring? Maybe... Will it slow pacing? Maybe... Will it make things more fun or less fun? Maybe... Here is my point: Now that the underlying physics programming has advanced this far, a significant MAV and retro power/acceleration decrease like this is one of the few design directions within the feel of flight that we haven't actually tried yet. Let's find out how the idea affects fun and gameplay by testing it for a significant enough time to get used to the change and be objective (not knee-jerk reactionary) about it.
