With Alpha 4.8 now live and DefenseCon 2956 bringing a massive influx of players, ships, and activity across Stanton, the 'verse feels more alive than ever… but also more cluttered than ever. Persistent Entity Streaming is one of Star Citizen’s greatest strengths — but today, it also creates a growing issue: player-generated clutter accumulating everywhere. We see it daily: Ships abandoned on outposts or blocking landing pads Wrecks and cargo containers drifting near stations Hundreds of bottles, medical items, and debris left in high-traffic areas Freight elevators and logistics zones becoming congested This is not just a visual or immersion issue — it likely contributes to server load, physics calculations, and overall performance degradation, especially during high-population events like DefenseCon. A Proposal: Make Cleanliness a Gameplay Loop Instead of treating this as a technical limitation alone, why not turn it into a fully integrated, player-driven gameplay system? 1. Dynamic Cleanup Missions Missions triggered when: A ship remains inactive on a pad/outpost beyond a timer Excess debris accumulates in a location Players can: Tow, salvage, or scrap abandoned ships Collect and recycle debris or loose items Rewards scale based on volume, hazard, or location importance 2. Ecology & Recycling Economy Introduce a “Clean the 'Verse” economy layer: Waste collection → recycling → material reinjection into industry Different material values (metal scrap, plastics, components, hazardous waste) Integration with existing and future systems (salvage, crafting, refueling loops) This would: Give purpose to “junk” items Create new roles (clean-up crews, sanitation contractors, orbital recyclers) Support industrial and logistics gameplay 3. Infrastructure Maintenance Missions Freight elevators blocked? → Repair / clear missions Stations cluttered? → Contract-based cleanup jobs High-traffic zones dynamically generate “maintenance alerts” This would make the universe feel: Reactive Alive Maintained by players, not invisible systems 4. Soft Regulation Without Breaking Freedom Instead of hard despawns: Use timers + incentives, not forced cleanup Players who abandon assets create opportunities for others Lawful vs unlawful cleanup (salvage rights, ownership, crime ratings?) Why This Matters Star Citizen is building a fully physicalized universe — but that comes with consequences. Right now, clutter is: A missed gameplay opportunity A potential performance burden A growing immersion breaker Turning it into a system would: Improve performance indirectly Add meaningful emergent gameplay Strengthen the simulation aspect of the 'verse Final Thought If persistence is what makes Star Citizen unique…then maintenance should be part of the simulation too. Let players not only explore and exploit the 'verse —but also take care of it. “Clean the 'Verse” could become as important as hauling, salvaging, or bounty hunting. Let’s be responsible citizens of the 'verse. What do you think?
