I am wondering how this is gonna be solved. Localized physics need to be able to keep things in place, but I assume for deco elements and such there will be anchoring points, and in any way you can simply define this as a property of the item and exclude cargo crates from it. But you can still place cargo crates on the physics grid outside of the special grav plating and it should work. So far what has been conveyed to my knowledge is that exceptional influences like concussions from attacks or collisions would or could make that stuff fly through the ship and become a potential hazard to itself and other things and people. What if people take that risk? It would merely mean you gotta stay away from such crates and avoid grave dangers. If you do that, you could extend your cargo capacity a lot. I could imagine though that this is maybe tolerated in connection to a slightly increased risk. E.g. you likely won't get any cargo plating in a 300-series, but you could place a small crate there. Otherwise the space there seems wasted. (Maybe plating will be added with the 300-series rework?) What I am also wondering then is whether cargo plating has an autonomous energy supply or whether it can fail with system failure just as the regular gravity can. (Even an autonomous supply could fail though.)
