After watching Calling All Devs (5 NOV 18) and hearing Lead Lighting Artist Chris Campbell explain the necessity for ship headlights to be bright enough in order to illuminate oncoming asteroids from a safe distance (which introduces shadow rendering complications), I thought that perhaps this particular game-mechanic could be addressed through the HUD which could "outline" approaching asteroids (from an appropriate speed-dependent distance) that were potentially a danger to navigation so the pilot could "see" them and steer clear. Other potentially "dangerous" objects could also be displayed in this manner. Having a game-mechanic that functions this way through a HUD system seems reasonable for technology 930 years in the future and would reduce or eliminate in-game light and shadow issues by using a different system. Now I know CR might say that such a system would require some form of "active radar" (thus giving away a ship's location), but the future is full of many technological wonders such as "gravity-wave detectors" that could passively sense the gravity waves given off by approaching asteroids (or other large moving bodies), and voila, problem solved. Please up-vote if you like this idea!
