Hello CIG team, I’m writing this post following a long (and heated) internal discussion with my orgmates after the recent mention of instancing in upcoming Star Citizen features. Many of us have been debating what this could mean for the future of the network architecture and the vision of a truly shared universe. Some of my orgmates are worried that: * The lack of player count increases since the introduction of static server meshing, * The absence of updates or references to dynamic server meshing, * And now the announcement of instancing as part of future gameplay features, …might suggest that the current network tech has reached its limits, and that we might be moving away from the original idea of a “meshed universe” toward a more heavily instanced one. Personally, I see instancing as a potentially good tool — when used to serve gameplay, not to replace the open nature of the universe. For example, instancing could make sense for curated PvE or PvP scenarios (like recently shown at CitCon, isolated missions or dungeon-style events) where external interference or performance constraints would otherwise ruin the experience. What would be concerning, however, is if previously open locations like Distribution centers, Brio's breaker yard, Kareah, Jumptown suddenly became instanced and segregated, breaking immersion and the feeling of a shared world that makes Star Citizen so unique. So, to help clarify things (and calm down our org’s heated debate ), I’d like to ask a few direct (and a bit blunt) questions: Is instancing being introduced primarily as a gameplay design tool or as a technical workaround for current networking limits? It has been shown as something introduced as a way to give us curated content, that we know, is that its only purpose? Does the long-term roadmap still include dynamic server meshing, or has its priority changed? There were mentions that switching to Dynamic from Static would have been a gradual change and not the flip of a switch like it was when we went from no mesh to a meshed environement, are those changes happening under the hood or will we see them added in batch? Should we expect instancing to affect existing open-world areas, or will it be limited to new mission-oriented or high-load scenarios? There has been mention of bars in cities becoming instanced to welcome quest givers, will only bars be instanced or is the plan to instance the city as a whole? Is the concept of a single “megaserver” — a truly shared Persistent Universe for all players — still technically viable? This is more of a an implied question: will regions EU, ASIA, USA, AUS still exist in a scenario where you achieve the megaserver? Thank you for taking the time to read this. Many of us simply want to understand how these evolutions fit into the grand vision that originally inspired us to back Star Citizen. Fly safe
