Anasazi. It's a great word. It sounds cool. It's also controversial. I'm an anthropologist and the name has been in my awareness for a long time. I first learned about it in undergrad and it has always served as a case example of not respecting people and their culture. I noticed the name immediately when I was reading about Terra a few years back. I don't really know if there is lore behind why the sea got that name. I couldn't find anything about it. I can't think of any social or political commentary that you would want to make by using the name. I found one literary reference to the "Anasazi Sea" in a short story called Raw Water, so perhaps the name is being used as an homage. I'm not sure that it's worth it, in this case. I don't usually make this kind of post. I've thought about it for a long time and finally decided that it is better to say something than not. After all, you are using this as a prominent place name in what will probably end up being a popular game. You may have been unaware of the controversial nature of the name. I might suggest reconsidering whether to continue using it. It's a lot easier to change now than after release, when it might draw attention (the bad kind). It's from a Navajo word applied to the Ancestral Puebloan peoples meaning "ancient enemy" or "enemy ancestors" and later adopted by early archaeologists, who used it out of convenience. Many modern Puebloans do not want the term used for their ancestors, or even for their ancestors to be lumped together in the first place. Some people would consider use of the term to be racist, something which I suspect you'd like to avoid. We've seen how even intentional social commentary in a recent game has been poorly received. Here's what the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center has to say about it: https://indianpueblo.org/what-does-anasazi-mean-and-why-is-it-controversial/ My point in making this post is to simply make you aware of the controversy and how it impacts the interests of the project. Thanks for your time.
