Hi CIG UI Teams, some questions for you.... Is there or will there be an official map of the Milky Way galaxy showing the locations of the systems from the ARK Starmap? Where are the ARK Starmap's systems located in the galaxy relative to the galactic center? How much space do the systems in the ARK Starmap take up in the galaxy? Is there or will there be any lore taking place beyond our galaxy? The discoveries that are being made by images from the James Webb Space Telescope are bringing to mind exciting possibilities about the known universe, and with that a curiosity and interest in seeing just how expansive the Star Citizen universe might be in the future for us. Granted, when talking about the cosmos on a scale presented by JWST imagery, it would be difficult to compare when considering how distances are reduced in Star Citizen. It is still an exciting topic that could perhaps one day see similarities transfer into our travels and explorations in the 'verse. Looking at opposite ends of the ARK Starmap, or the stars and systems presently known that are in the map, it appears that the greatest distance might be from the Vermillion star to the Ail'ka system. Although no routes were found between those locations, it might be possible to estimate a distance. The travel distance from Ail'ka to the Davien system might be about halfway through the group, which is approximately 114 or 131 AU by way of large ships, although approximately 81 or 113 AU using small and medium ships. These are not direct routes, so it may be easier to estimate actual distances between two adjacent systems like Sol and Croshaw. If we were to travel from Earth in the Sol system to the habitable world of Angeli in the Croshaw system, which appears to be the system closest to ours, the ARK Starmap currently shows that flight distance to be approximately 44 or 54 AU, depending on the route. This is just eyeballing it, and it's a rough one at that, likely very far off from the actual numbers, looking at the shape of the group of all of the known systems, it is somewhat cylindrical, very loosely at that... one guess could be that the systems group is roughly 550 AU by 350 AU by 250 AU. No math was done, that was just using the Sol-to-Croshaw travel distance and just eyeing it, very roughly across the map, so all of this is likely incorrect. Going with those numbers anyway, the guessing game can continue with where they might fit in relative to the galaxy, although there's also considering how the distances and such like planet and moon sizes in the 'verse do not align with the real perceived universe, so it's known this is all a guesswork at a small corner of a fictional universe. Brief divergence from fiction, the galaxy might have a diameter of 100,000 to 200,000 light years across, let's say 150,000. Approximately 63,241 astronomical units equal 1 light year, so that would be roughly 9.4 billion AU from one end to the other end of the galaxy. To say that's big would be a gross understatement, even the distances between planets in our own system would be difficult to fathom when the greatest distances we physically travel at present (space telescopes aside) are confined to this planet. Getting back to the 'verse, with the distances in space being greatly reduced, the same with sizes of planets and moons, it would make sense that the galaxy itself would be much smaller. Even after shrinking the galaxy down a lot, it would still seem that all of the systems in the ARK Starmap would fit within a very small section of the galaxy. A possible exception to that might be if wormhole travel between systems were to be vastly greater distances than what might be expected, to compensate for the reduced distances within each system, as experienced through quantum travel. In that case, maybe the ARK Starmap systems could be spread out across more of the galaxy. Although the current travel distances from that map would not align with that, there's nothing stopping CIG from adjusting the numbers. Either way, it would be interesting to find out. While we might be limited to a single system now, with more to follow in the upcoming years, it would be great to have the opportunity to introduce intergalactic travel, to explore the vastness of space beyond our own galaxy, to be able to fly out to the void between galaxies and beyond, to find ourselves arriving on a planet in a system in another galaxy. Maybe we'll need another type of drive, maybe even a unique type of ship, to achieve such a distance. Then there's going beyond the known universe, well, one can dream. In the meantime, it is fun exploring what we have in the 'verse right now. Anyway, thanks for reading. It would be great if we could get the official word from CIG on these questions and topics.
