I understand that prison and law mechanics are still in development and that prison is currently very buggy, so it makes sense that it ticks down while you are logged out for the sake of players who are in jail due to bugs being able to get out after a nights rest. However, I very much hope this is NOT the plan for the final product. Jail time should absolutely only tick down when you are logged in IMO and I beleive this was the original design. I hope CIG plans to return to this design. Let me give some reasons why: 1. A game mechanic based on encouraging the player to stop playing the game is not a good game mechanic. Jail time counting you logged out makes all prison gameplay uninteresting. Why toil for an hour hand mining to shave an hour more off your stay when you can just go play some other video game, or go to bed? It also incentivizes players with crime stats to go get killed right before they log off so they have "worked off" their whole sentence by the morning. Time counting logged off amounts to a "soft ban" for the duration of your sentence. To be clear, prison terms would need to be adjusted (shortened) if it only counted in game time, but it should not be optional. 2. Prison gameplay, while basic now, has incredible potential beyond just mining. I presume CIG understands this but just for others reading I will give some examples: Prison will be a great place to get criminal missions both in prison (attacking other gangs, distracting guards, assisting escapes of others), and out (tons of options). It will be an incredible way to introduce players who want to go full criminal to gangs, mission givers, unique cosmetics (tattoos you can only get in prison), and most importantly, reputation. Just like IRL going to prison for your gang is how you earn trust. Then there's tons of other "labor" we could be asked to do. Maybe different prisons have different things. Klesher is mining. But we could also, one day, have prison labor include salvage, repair, or hell, even "work-release programs" where 5-6 prisoners are taken out of prison to do some kind of tasks, like clean up of dangerous hazards, exploration in dangerous areas, volunteering to test medicine that can have semi-permanent effects, or even forming a suicide squad to fight the vanduul. 3. Being able to pass the time logged off significantly reduces the punishment aspect. While it has a similar effect from the point of view of noncriminals, for the criminal there is a massive difference between having to stay logged in, and doing prison gameplay, than there is when you are simply able to turn the game off and play something else, or again, just go to bed if its late. I hope the intention is to return to logged in hours only when the gameplay is stable enough for that to make sense. If the intention is to keep logged off time as counting I STRONGLY suggest a compromise where logged off time counts for some fraction, like 1/4th, of time logged in. So a 2 hour sentence takes 8 hours if you just log off.
