With the information shared in CitizenCon about how Shards are going to work, it got me thinking. My first thought was that Shards would need to be conservative in the number of concurrent active players to prepare for spikes in server load. What I mean here is that while a Shard may be able to handle many users spread out over the 'verse, can they equally handle all players being in the same location? My second thought then is that surely shenanigans will ensue, where somebody organises in global chat to have everybody in the Shard show up at the same location (if Global (Shard) chat remains a thing). But then I thought, that isn't even required. Two decent sized Orgs having a battle may see almost everyone in a Shard in the same location. My third thought was, what about Orgs large enough to fill a Shard themselves, or worse, too large to fit onto a single Shard? Is this something we should be concerned about? With server numbers currently at fifty, how confident are we that we'll get that over a thousand? It seems the 5 largest Orgs have over 6000 members each and a combined 59,000~ people. If they had an "Org Event" where they expected a quarter of their members (1500) to show up to the same outpost, what should they expect? It seems the 45 largest Orgs have over 1000 members each and a combined 140,000~ people. If they had an "Org Event" where they expected a quarter of their members (250) to show up to the same outpost, what should they expect? By virtue of this issue pertaining to the largest Orgs it's a non-trivial number of people that are going to have their gameplay shaped by the size and fluidity of Shards. Hoping a Dev can put my (and other) minds at ease by answering the above questions and preferably expanding on this area in general outside of my specific questions. Thanks team! Edit: Should be noted that those numbers include affiliates, but I don't think that detracts much.
