From the Patch notes for 3.20 ➣ Trichording is not possible anymore, the strongest acceleration axis is forward ➣ Pitch and Yaw cannot be combined Can we get a discussion about this? I understand what trichording is. I understand what it does and the implications of it. I understand that it's emergent behavior that wasn't expected or maybe even not wanted by the designers. However, it's also complete natural. It makes sense physically and it makes sense intuitively. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it as far as a 'space sim' goes. So why would you stamp it out? Why wasn't trichording embraced and become part of the design. Why don't you just flip some stats on the ship matrix and let some 'max velocities' be a little bit higher for experimental pilots? More importantly, why would you use a heavy-handed approach for changing it like 'Pitch and Yaw can't be combined.' That makes absolutely zero physical sense. I'm not now able to point my ship towards a corner? I have to move 'stair-step' like a TRON cycle? Why didn't you make a fix that was more rational, (like reducing MAV thruster output.) [EDIT: Now that I think a bit more about it, Pitch and Yaw have nothing to do with Trichording. That's a separate bullet-point. Trichording deals with strafe inputs. That actually makes the 'Pitch and Yaw' line much much worse. ] This question is to ask 'Why.' ( I know 'When' questions aren't answered, but 'Why' questions seem to be the absolute most appropriate question for this particular forum. ) I've often said I want to be a fly-on-the-wall in your design meetings, to see the discussions you have and the pros and cons you've weighed as you make your decisions. I really think that needs to come out MORE during this "Open Development" that you're doing. -- At the risk of sounding antagonistic, I'll leave this. Emergent behavior is not something to be shot-down. It's not the enemy. It's your friend, it's free features, is free 'depth-of-gameplay.' You want to build systems that are deep enough, robust enough, for emergent behavior to show up. When it does, you embrace it, incorporate it. But gently. It you try to coerce it, it'll break.
