Well, I made some great progress! Part 1 consists of the non-actuated parts and the base setup. I began by building a support frame under the floor I had made recently, so the rails and mounts would float below the floor. The linear rail system was purchased at Vevor.com since many asked where I got them, they came with the rolling/caster mounts. From there I cut down 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/4" thick aluminum c channel for the slider rails ( same thing I used to make my seat rails ) Atop the slider channels, I mounted a 1/2" plate. I am already going to swap this out for 1/2" hot rolled steel so there is no flex at all (current issues with 1/4" aluminum) From there I hacked up an office chair. I removed the wheels to keep the centerpiece, which I had to shim with a temporary piece of wood. This was more of a proof of concept, which worked nicely! I am now designing a piece in 3d that will be milled from aluminum to place the whole unit in one and cover up to the minimum height of the piston at its lowest point. Here's where it gets fun! On top of the chair piston mount, I added an aluminum plate to mount a Garelick boater chair mount. This allows me to move the seat, once it's locked in the rails, for fine-tuning and adjustments based on the person in the cockpit. There are about 8-10 notches and it glides sooooo smooth. On top of the glider is a box rail system that attaches to the seat. I plan to 3D print either plastic pieces to cover all the rails and ugly mechanics underneath, or possibly have something CNC'd. Here is a short video with a verbal explanation of some things: https://youtu.be/9kvJXvB-OPA?si=2ofhdQPfM9Jan7_6 Part 2 will consist of: - Adding the actuator and getting this thing moving! - Setting sensors in the floor so the seat knows when to stop based on who is in the seat. ( Like a memory button box on an automotive seat). - Adding a locking mechanism for the chair swivel. - Setting up seat controls auto movement, possibly based on a weight sensor? If you want to follow the build, I have a main thread here -> https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50264/thread/that-sim-ship I plan to post individual aspects of the build to help with searching.
