I just wanted to share a SimPit that I'm working on here in the land down under. I figured I'd share the whole build here as I go so people can maybe utilise some of the solutions I've adopted for my simpit, if they decide to build one themselves. I know that the biggest challenge for me so far, was overcoming a lot of mounting limitations, and doing so while remaining within budget but still achieving the overall result (and experience) I'm after from this build. I've included a few indicative prices to possibly help others planning their own build, price their simpit's. How it all comes together I decided on repurposed monitor mounts for my keyboard / mouse combo, and a second one for my laptop to sit on. I was quite lucky to get a hold of these particular monitor mounts as cheaply and as locally as I did (there is far less choice in Australia for these kind of things then there is in the USA). These have been perfect for my application (at least so far), as they are strong, easily adjustable and best of all, affordable, coming in at $49 AUD each from a local supplier. For the seat and control system, I used a 'two frame' type deign that adopted two frames, one attached to the moving parts above the seat rails and the other to the non-moving parts of the subframe. The reason for this was so I could move my seat back and forward and my flight controls would move with it, removing the need for me to reposition my H.O.T.A.S every time I adjusted the seat. I did the same with most of my harness mounting points so that they moved with the seat. The only exception was the shoulder straps, which mount to the non-moving subframe, which only need a minor adjustment if I decide to move the seat. The H.O.T.A.S throttle and joystick are secured by repurposed wall type speaker mounts with MDF wooden plates mounted to the moving seat frame. I did this in order to get the adaptability I wanted for the flight controls. I found that the most comfortable setting for the joystick was with a significant down angle with allows a good 'pull back' without my shoulder feeling like its being strained. I picked up the speaker mounts from a local supplier for about $20 each, and for the most part they are perfect for the application. My only complaint would be they are not as 'rock solid' as I would like, so there is a little 'float' in these as control mounts, but so far I don't have a problem with that. (I already owned a Saitek x52 H.O.T.A.S from my Flight Simulator days, so that cost was negated, but they go for around $170 AUD these days.) I attached the x52 with security head, counter sunk bolts. I actually bought M6 bolts instead of M5 by mistake, so I used a 6mm drill bit to widen the holes in the x52 body to fit the 6mm bolts without issue. I personally think that this head style actually looks really good on the x52 and will tie into the finished product quite nicely. (100mm long security bolt was the only lengths easily available on short notice, so these bolts will be cut down once the simpit is complete.) The racing seat I was lucky enough to pick up on Gumtree for $80 second hand (coming out of a guys race sim, so its like-new condition), but they usually go for around the $250 mark from retailers. I opted for a 5 point harness to complete the chair to give it a more 'small aircraft' feel, even though I haven't seen anything like that in SC in-game graphics so far. To keep the price down, I decided on a race harness instead of an actual aircraft type, and it ended up running me about $120 from a local car mod supplier. I could have gotten one on Ebay for as little as $60, but the shipping time discouraged me. The universal rail kit for mounting the seat, (and the seat frame) was $60 from a local auto parts supplier. All the steel I bought from a local steel wholesaler. I spent about $100, but I bought WAY more then I needed, so the actual cost of steel was closer to $60 all up. I do all my own (mediocre) welding, so there is not cost associated there apart from the welding wire for the MIG. Bolts and screws (for the most part) I bought from a local wholesaler for about $10, but a miscalculation on may part relating to MDF mounting requirements meant I had to go to a local hardware store and pay another $35 to buy the extra bolts I needed. It shouldn't have cost over $20 had I done it right the first time. I should mention that the chequered plate also ran me about $45 extra from a local hardware store, precut. I really wanted something solid under my feet, so I utilised this plate with a 25x25x1.6 box steel frame to brace it. I attached it to the subframe with bolts so that it can be raised and lowered should I need to change the angle to something lower in order to accommodate rudder peddles implemented in this build in the future. It's not much to look at now, but once its complete (and fully painted), this rig should be quite some fun to fly on. Frame Components Main Sub Frame - 30x30x1.6 Box Steel. TV secured with standard flat screen mount, attached to 25x25x1.6 Box Steel vertical supports. Visual TV Type Monitor, 50" BAUHN - Mounted beyond the foot plate. Finishing 'Hammer Finish' Black Paint. Build Time 7 Days
