So, I decided that my current setup (using an old writing desk) was not so up to date for playing a game like Star Citizen. Of course, I don’t have a lot of room for a separate computer desk, (or money for another computer), so it would have to work for multiple things besides SC. I decide I might be able to build something myself, but first I wanted to investigate where I wanted the controls. First, I took an old piece of plywood and attached some PVC to make a table. I used 11/4’’ PVC legs with 1’’ PVC that would slide inside them to make the height adjustable. Put everything together with screws, so I could change it later. Then I just used books and whatever else I found lying around to prop up everything into the position it felt the most comfortable. The big problem was the joystick. Getting it in to the position and height that felt the most comfortable would have required cutting off my leg, and though I think SC is a great game, that seemed to be a bit extreme, so I decided to investigate a more traditional between the legs position. Also, it interfered with the use of the mouse, when I needed to use it. To accomplish this, I built a joystick mount out of PVC that could be adjusted for different heights and angles. Then I cut out a semicircular piece of the table to make room for the joystick. This allows me to lower the position to make it more comfortable. I find that I can actually type quite well with the joystick there (I am typing this with it there), although I probably would want to be able to fold it out of the way if I were going to type for any long period. The thing that most surprises me is that I like the throttle slightly higher than the mouse. I wouldn’t have thought I would want it that way. This could be because of the armrests on my chair and I may take them off next to see how that influences my feelings about it. I may want a chair with lower armrests (these are not adjustable) or build them into the desk itself, in true simpit style.
