Ok, so at one point in time I had a full size simpit that I'd built, and it was great, but then my wife decided we were going to move to a smaller apartment and I had to sell it since we had no room. Now I'm back in a bigger apartment again, but I have a daughter, so no mancave to set up a full size pit in. In fact, all I have for my computer / gaming area nowadays is a tiny little corner of the living room, which definitely complicates a hardcore sim gamer =P What I need some input/suggestions on is keyboard/mouse/dual stick layout. The immediate problem is that it's just too much stuff to put on a reachable area for me. Either the keyboard, the mouse, or the joysticks constantly have to be moved to make way for the others, especially as I go between different games or (in star citizen's case) different aspects of the game. Going from flying to footwork takes a complete re-arranging of my workspace. In my old simpit design, I had two sliding platforms (one on each side of the chair), with my keyboard on a platform in front of me. When I needed joysticks, I'd slide the platforms forward, and the joysticks (which were normally behind me) would then be at the right point for my hands. When I was done flying, I'd slide them backwards and have my mouse and a gamepad in their place instead. This setup worked well, but unfortunately took up a great deal of space, which is no longer an option. The other issue with standard sliding platforms is stability. The ones I had before were made of 2" PVC rail framework which made it very sturdy (enough to stand on without breaking), but using things like cabinet drawer rails or traditional desktop sliding keyboard rails just feels too flimsy to me, they usually bow and buckle over time, and there's also the issue of movement when you dont want it (I get pretty rough flying dual stick sometimes, and I dont need the controls sliding away from me). The area I have to work with is only about 45 inches wide, which limits me to using a single monitor (for now) - an ASUS 27" that I've had for like 10 years now, lol. That gives me just a tiny bit of room on each side of the monitor for any platforms or storage space.
