So I was watching a youtube video and was inspired to create my own chair. I will do my best to post pictures and descriptions of the steps to complete this project. To complete this project you need to to use an existing chair where its back is connect to its base via the sides or armrests. EACH STEP IS ESSENTIALLY COMPLETED TWICE AS YOU HAVE 2 ARMS OF THE CHAIR. PLEASE REMEMBER: These will be MIRROR IMAGES of each other. NOT DUPLICATES!!! I did not take many pictures of the chair before construction but as you can see here there are 4 bolts on the side of the chair. (2 in the back 2 in the bottom) These bolts connect the armrests and back to the chair and without them you'd only have a stool to sit on. After taking apart your computer chair you need to make an outline of the armrests on a 1" thick piece of wood. By just drawing the exterior outline of the armrest you can get the general shape on the cutout. Keep in mind that the size of this needs to be at a comfortable arm length/height level for you. Make sure to drill out your holes where the bolts connect the armrest to the rest of the chair! Cut this piece of wood out using a bandsaw, sand and treat however you wish . As you see here I applied Polyurethane for that glossy protected finished. Once dry, You need to screw in supporting wooden runners for the platform. I used 2" wood screws and 3/4" x 1" strips of oak. You can save yourself a bit of trouble by sanding down the sharp edges of the wood BEFORE attaching to the side panel. As you can see below, the side panels are completed and finally reinstalled back onto the chair. With the side panels attached you can now start to work on the platforms for your HOTAS. I started with a rectangle piece of 3/4 oak and eye balled the platform to swoop around the back of the chair. Drawing on the oak and eyeballing it enough to fit your needs. If you have an electric sander try to sand the last bit of custom fitting rather than cutting them. Lastly once you believe you have a snug fit, Attach them with 2" wood screws by drilling them into the main sideboard and support runners. With the platform attached you can now position your hardware. Mark and drill out the holes required by your HOTAS. (remove hardware before drilling) You can find hardware to attach them at your local Home Depot! The next step is upholstery. I was able to find 2 yards of matching leather and memory foam stuffing at a local craft store. First I cut out my padding. (NOTE: Go big here as you will be applying a lot of pressure when you wrap the armrest.) As you can see I went THICK with the memory foam and its okay to be a bit messy as this will all be covered. Once you have a cut out piece of stuffing cut the covering material in half and fold the bottom of it under the stuffing closest to the controls. (see pictures) Use a staple gun to secure the leather in position. Continue working away from the controls folding under the platform stapling and cutting away any excess with a razor knife. Fold Under, Tuck, Staple, Cut Once you have completed upholstering the armrests, reattach them to the chair. I bought two 5' USB extensions for this chair to easily connect it to the computer. Tuck the wires into the chair for aesthetics. I hope you all enjoyed this walk-through! Feel free to PM me with any questions. Take my love, take my land, Take me where I cannot stand. I don't care, I'm still free, You can't take the sky from me. Take me out to the black, Tell them I ain't comin back. Burn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me. There's no place, I can be, Since I've found Serenity. You can find the whole photo album here: https://goo.gl/photos/3pN1vMVSsjuCaYQP8
