Well a while back i mentioned in a few threads of building a chair. I have made four total versions of this chair trying to narrow down what i like and what i didnt. Building a cheaper version till i was satisfied to build what i liked. So finally i have gotten it started. This is still very much a work in progress. I am currently testing a few idea's for Keyboard tray. Joystick mounts and decals ect. The first picture here is V1. I basically used scrap steel sheet from work. Some conduit steel tubing and 1/4-20 bolts to through bolt and mount to my yard sale special chair. Total costs at this point was maybe 45 (including the chair). I enjoyed the x-55s at the time. I have since parted with them but thats another story. So later i got a little bored with this setup. I did eventually add casters to the bottom (five to be exact and i believe 2 inch casters without lock. So V2 was underway after i built another friend a little sim chair. At this point i got a few ideas scurrying through my brain. v1 was about 2014 Below is v2 done in 2016 shortly after moving into my new home ( love my garage space :grinning: ) So the idea was to build a platform i could mount all my required controls (FPS, Flight, and beer) to my chair. I actually loved this setup and really wanted to build on it. So i began turn the gears again. Then shortly after ( few months ) i built v3. Basically I took the small wooden platform and built a box for it. Was a bit bigger for the arm space . Only issue was i went a bit too big and i didn't like the feel. I wanted something Solid. I wanted something industrial and had a strong presence. I Also wanted to be able to built a overhead panel and have plenty of space. I wanted a small profile in my small cubby hole in the house. So i ended up giving my desk I built in the picture to my wife for her school work and her space ( she's hard working and deserved it ) and went to the drawing board. Here i am about 1 and half years later building this thing out slowly. Below is Astra Chair Mk. IV Dont mind the dirty clothes... they got washed i promise. So i dont have many pictures yet of my current progress but i have a collection of the "making of the frame". Like i said this is still very much a WIP and i have much bigger plans for this chair. I just figured i'd share with you all while i build. I am currently stuck finding a good solution to building a Keyboard tray. Looking and skimming through the web for special hinges and pivots and bushings. Even have looked at a few articulating arms. Nothing seems to be fitting what i have envisioned. Also I am planning the controls. I plan to build a over head controller. Also two smaller switch controls down on the arms.. but i have not finalized any idea. Also i am trying to pick decals and certain touches to the chair to give more of a feel. A monitor plate to curve around the monitor stand and back light with LEDs is heavily on my mind. I have a ton of Blue LEDs and a few power supplies to run the circuit. Also LED's under the boxes. To explain the boxes... they will (or rather ONE box will) house my entire computer. I am currently working with acrylic to finish the boxes and get my computer in the chair. Acrylic is quiet the pain in the butt to work with if your not savy to it. I've coped leaning on my woodworking experience but.. had a few problems. Not 100% sold on the Wooden platform style.. thinking of going with a little more curved or edges for shape rather then a rectangle. This frame can hold my weight (190) and not tip over. I have kids so.. being safe was my priority. Once i get my pictures upload to the PC ill update this thread. Also maybe by the weekend i may have some progress to show the rest of you. I hope you all enjoyed this read and any feedback is welcome. I like tossing around Idea's with people of similar interests. This has been a crazy build and i've enjoyed doing it. Also i hope to pull off the control panels to a T. I have a laser engraver and enjoy designing many things. I have a whole other topic i can discuss just with my adventure in building control panels.
