Executive Notes TLDR: Planetside owners look financially shaky. Planetside has been doing meshed FPS for decades, and also vehicle physics. Looking under that hood might be worth purchasing the game. Daybreak reportedly sold Planetside, Planetside 2, and Planetside Arena's IP for a $5.9 million dollars to Bay Tree Tower Limited a bit over a year ago. It's not clear (and at that price unlikely) if the core technology was sold too Following the acquisition, the development of PlanetSide 2 was transferred from Daybreak's Rogue Planet Games to Toadman Interactive, a subsidiary of Enad Global 7 (EG7) - daybreak's parent ( https://www.enadglobal7.com/ ) Rogue Planet Games hasn't had it's fate announced, but evidence suggests it ceased operation mid 2024. This January, Toadman Interactive announced it's also shutting down, with layoffs also affecting Pirahana games (owned by EG7) So, looks like EG7 isn't doing so hot, and Planetside 2 looks like it might be in danger of sunsetting. Planetside 2 probably isn't a big earner. It currently has about 10-13K DAU with a peak concurrency of around 1.1K (https://ps2.fisu.pw/population/). A fairly stable and dedicated following, but nothing like it used to be. It has a subscription and free model, along with cosmetics, and paid booster packs - though it's done in such a way it doesn't make it P2W. Just P2-be-more-flexible. The community vibe is comparable to Star Citizen and I feel they'd fit well here, and there are many Planetside players here already. It unfortunately currently has an out-of-control cheating problem and needs some rebalance on aspects of the game like cloakers who not only make it easier to hide cheating, but are just crap to play against, but nothing serious. If anything it could use some more modern graphical features to pull in newer players. So why would CIG want it? The tech. Planetside has been doing meshed FPS for decades. They've had a very long time to drill down their vehicle physics. Just being able to look under that hood might be worth it, and if CIG decided to keep operating the game and not just take the tech, welcome a whole bunch of potential new Citizens into CIG's network.
