Cold Waters is an unpolished indie dev feeling game about submarine warfare that warrants the attention of backers and CIG devs for how it implements a rather basic but effective approach to stealth gameplay, much of the depth is oceanic based (sonar physics etc) but the hide and seek aspect of play is fairly chefs kiss you gain and lose signatures, you have to match it to your catalog of known sonar signatures and wait to get a fully triangulated or observed course and heading for them etc. the game is on sale on steam right now. manual control of the sub is fine in the game but generally you have a command con to give your crew orders eg. Make depth 200, make heading 172, periscope depth etc.; sonar simulation is good but not next level: you can hide in a ships baffles etc. and be pinged and hear pings and pick up on propeller cavitation and mask your signature in a wreck’s wake etc. but it’s also not as die hard as, oh if I fire my torpedo on the side of my ship pointed away from the target they won’t hear it as good. the map engine design is pretty cool, you can have battles off the cliffs of Norway etc. but the map itself is super low poly and bland And the AI enemy/whales disregards collision lmao. It was super intense taking a mission to slip past enemy patrols and get off the coast of Russia to lob cruise missiles at some factories. You have to passively and quietly creep up on their patrol frigates and observe their patterns then try to make your move at a stealthy crawl past their detection net, steer around sea mines etc. because you do NOT want to evade torpedoes in the water, they are tenacious and they are lethal; and then get within 100k yards of target, raise to Missile/periscope depth, send a ping just to make sure nothing is right behind you, up the radar mast to do a quick sweep for enemies the , then lob 8 cruise missiles and tell half of Siberia where you are, reload the tube launch a decoy torpedo blazing north while you get back down to the seabed scooting as quickly and quietly as you can in the other direction and watch as minutes later anti-sub planes and helicopters swarm your previous firing position spam it with sonar buoys and half the boats in the harbor come blazing over there at flank speed (making hella noise, dopes) and then you have to sneak your way back to Scotland with a handful of leftover ordnance and a prayer. Super difficult game but hella worth the playtime and has mod support.
