So when it came out I played Elite Dangerous all the time but eventually got bored and stopped. Over time I got a VR headset (not related to ED) and loved it. Obviously when ED got VR support I tried it, at the time I had keyboard/mouse set up, and thought it was just 'OK'. Standing/room scale experiences were just way more engaging and immersive than sitting with a keyboard/mouse. Throughout I've been playing Star Citizen of course and allot of it. I eventually picked up a HOTAS setup for Star Citizen, and a few months after went with Dual stick. So after some time and not allot to do in Star Citizen with the dual stick setup I started thinking about Elite Dangerous. So I reinstalled it, got my sticks bound for basic flight stuff, and strapped on the HTC Vive. Now.... I'm in love with Elite Dangerous! Even mundane quests or trading routs are so immersive and breath taking. It feels so natural, hands on the flight sticks, looking around the cockpit, turning your head to see the holo-monitors pop up in response to your gaze, and seeing your avatar moving her/his flight stick in tandem with yours. It comes with some great advantages too, like in my hauler: it has windows everywhere, being able to look down and see the landing pad while smoothly controlling all directions via dual stick makes landing a breeze and fun. Also while in combat, watching your targets fly above or past you, and being able to track them with your head, or even target something above you or to your sides with just a quick look and touch of a button. Its awesome but more importantly insanely immersive! But... with that being said: After a few days of being lost in ED + VR, I booted ED in non VR, I just wanted to log on and check a ship transfer, and the mission board, no big deal... It was almost painful, it felt like a chore, getting to the side menus was a button again, I felt confined to this one section of screen, I couldn't just look around my cockpit freely, and for that short moment I had the feeling again. I was bored, and I didn't want to play the game... I just wanted to wait until I was ready to strap in and sit down for a long haul. Which is what I did, and when I did the feeling of boredom was gone again. I was immersed again, feeling like a real life space trucker off to haul some goods and go where ever the money and mission givers sent me. Fuel scooping and watching solar flares arching up near my ships hull. Looking out my windows and watching galaxies and planets fly by. Suddenly all those long boring jumps are fun and enjoyable to watch as you speed off through the stars, and all in stereoscopic 3D! Elite Dangerous feels so much better with VR, and I know Star Citizen will be quite the same when it gets support eventually. Which I hope is sooner than later, because now I never want to go back. I want to play Star Citizen in VR so bad, I wan't to look around the interior of my Connie while I blast off into hyperspace without the immersion breaking push of a button and swinging my mouse around to 'see'. I know some of you will say "use Track IR" but it's not the same, it doesn't put you in the game like VR does. In conclusion: I hope some bored Citizens and CIG devs manage to read all the way through this, and actually give a setup like this a try because it's truly amazing, immersive, and fun. I can't wait to step into Star Citizen in VR one day! If you've been on the fence about either dual sticks or VR, jump off the fence, burn it to the ground, and rush out to buy both right now! Thank you for your time and I'll see you in the VeRse!
