A rewrite of Empire Deluxe in Unity Engine is in Alpha testing and headed for Kickstarter. This is the grandaddy of many computer games today, having its roots in a game developed in the 1970's, with major rewrites in 1987, 1993, 2003 and 2006 I've started a subreddit for it https://www.reddit.com/r/EmpireDeluxe/ also see: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1696861912/empire-deluxe-combined-edition https://www.twitch.tv/mokkbs https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNrWgYTc-ogSGcDtbKFKVdQ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Empire http://www.classicempire.com/ http://killerbeesoftware.com/ http://killerbeesoftware.com/edce/ksdata/UnitSetsInDetail.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJli9pf6bgc Interview with Mark Baldwin The original Empire computer game dates back to the 1970's written by Walter Bright. The first commercial version was written for various personal computer OS's in 1987. Computer Gaming World voted it #1 in 1990. Empire Deluxe followed in 1993. In 2003 Empire Deluxe Internet Edition was created by Mark Kinkaid of Killer Bee Software for Windows and ED Enhanced Edition soon followed. Killer Bee Software has continued to maintain the game. A Yahoo internet group has existed for Empire players since 1999, and a Yahoo group for modders since 2004. Empire was originally a turn based game vs the computer and all subsequent versions supported this game mode. Beginning with Empire Deluxe multi-player was introduced and was most often played as a Play-By-Mail (PBM) game over the Usenet. Empire Deluxe was also played over dial-up connections or hard-wired RS232 connections between up to 6 players, with 1 player acting as the dial-in host. When the internet became widely available a piece of software was written that emulated a dial-up connection utilizing the internet.Killer Bee Software's Empire Deluxe Internet Edition in 2003 was a rewrite of the game with several enhancements and native TCP/IP support for online turn-based play, although PBM was still popular. There was a very active community for both PBM and live games arranged on the Usenet and later Yahoo forum. There were ladder tournaments held regularly for a number of years. Teams would organize and challenge each other, or ad-hoc teams would be formed to play each other. In the case of PBM games, it was common for a player to be participating in multiple games simultaneously. We look forward to the latest version of Empire. Join us in Beta testing. A Kickstarter campaign is anticipated. Info about the KS will be posted in a reply.
