FS 2020 sold 200k-500k copies on steam (excluding consoles) in the first week, estimated by this site: https://steamspy.com/app/1250410 My hope is that this will help diminish the 'fun over realism' argument that is always invoked when a new feature in SC is almost great. I have used known comic and changed it a bit to fit the argument: Flying, as driving should at its core replicate realistic physics to be fun. Realism pushes the fun. The argument 'fun over realism' tries to stop that. Because people who use the argument 'fun over realism' see realism as the enemy of fun for warped reasons. Let's consider Flight Simulator 2020. The entire game is about realistic flying and realistic weather. That's all of it. There is nothing to unlock, no mission rewards. I have made the same argument for some features for SC, that if the underyling physics are fun, any task can be fun. That is then countered with the argument like 'fun over realism' / 'make it realistic, then take it back to fun'. These are bad arguments. Because they don't work, the evidence is out there. FS 2020 is according to the 'fun over realism' theory a 'timesink' without 'real gameplay'. This is evident when the devs use 'make it realistic, then take it back to fun'. In reality, they make a feature almost great, then nerf it back so that there is virtually no gameplay. This happened to the flight model (coupled canceling out physics). Let the underlying physics be realistic, and let it carry the gameplay of flying. Currently there is virtually no flying, and most flying is QT. Even flying around planets is QT-ified. Flying should take longer, QT should be less available in flying around a planet. So it shoud take longer, 10-20 minutes to get from space to a surface on Mictrotech and approach the landing site you want. If the physics is improved, it will be fun. FS 2020 proved that realistic flying, the so-called timesink, can be fun on its own. Flying has arrived in mainstream games. SC should not be 10-15 years behind this trend by keeping flying at BF2 levels of complexity.
