So I accidentally gave myself a bit of nostalgia today thinking about Landmark. It got me wondering what Star Citizen could be like if it borrowed some ideas from games like Landmark or, to a lesser extent, No Man's Sky. Hear me out before grabbing the pitchforks. Imagine if the environment itself was more interactive. Instead of almost everything boiling down to pointing a mining laser at a rock, players could actually leave small marks on the world. Crash a ship into a moon? Leave a crater. Cut down a tree? The tree is actually gone for a while. Large explosions leave temporary damage to the terrain. Mining actually changes the landscape instead of simply deleting a resource node. I'm not talking about turning Star Citizen into Minecraft or making every planet fully destructible. Think of it as Maelstrom's destruction philosophy, but extended to the environment in a controlled and persistent way. Obviously there would need to be technical limits, cleanup over time, and restrictions to prevent abuse. I just think it would add another layer of persistence. Right now the universe is persistent in terms of ships, cargo, reputation, and items, but the planets themselves are largely static. They're beautiful, but players leave very little lasting impact on them. Ironically, CIG often talks about building a "living, breathing universe" yet outside of resource harvesting or placing objects, the environment itself rarely reacts to what players do. Landmark was one of the few games that really made me appreciate how much interacting with the world itself added to immersion. It wasn't just the voxel technology. It was the feeling that the world belonged to the players because they could actually change it. Even No Man's Sky, despite being a much simpler game overall, lets you manipulate terrain in ways that make planets feel like something you're interacting with rather than just standing on. I know there are massive technical challenges with a game the size and fidelity of Star Citizen, especially since Planet Tech wasn't designed as a voxel system from the beginning. I'm not saying this would be easy or even practical to retrofit into the existing engine. I just think it's fun to imagine what Star Citizen could feel like if the environment itself remembered that we'd been there. Would you like to see limited environmental persistence like this, or do you think the technical cost would outweigh the benefits?
