I see trouble on the horizon for Star Citizen. If you look at the development roadmap, the unofficial one, you can see what work CIG has been concentrating on - CIG has been doing a lot of engine work. Unreal 5 contains 64bit positional information baked in, so you can have the huge systems far larger than 32x32km. It contains support for systems like dynamic server meshing. Its doing a lot of the work that CIG has had to do themselves, for new development teams. So CIG's edge... is being blunted constantly by these new engines. This is a good thing for us gamers, but is perhaps a bad thing for Star Citizen and CIG. Its a bad thing, because it means that the bar for competitors is being lowered, and quickly. And of course if you've looked at any videos of Unreal 5, you know that in addition to these features which were once unique to CIG's engine, the Unreal guys have a lot of additional features that do things like increase game performance and graphical fidelity. So its getting easier and easier to spin up a competitor - while avoiding a lot of the development that CIG has had to do. My point here, is that CIG doesn't have infinite time to build Star Citizen. It doesn't. With every passing day Star Citizen's competitors become able to launch games competitive with Star Citizen. The dream is getting easier and easier to build. And the Moral Online guys are even dipping their toes in the water with their new project "Mortal Exodus". Now you might not think much of Mortal Online or Mortal Online 2, but I've been playing Mortal Online 2, and I love it. Many of you will hate it, but Star Vault should not be discounted just because they're a far smaller company than CIG. Companies like Star Vault are very good at looking at what they could do ideally, and narrowing it down to what they must do to maximize the fun you get out of the game. They're efficient. They cut out the fat, CIG... you know... they tend to notoriously leave the fat in. Quantum rather than a player driven economy would be one example of this. There are many others. For a long time now, companies that wanted to wade into the Space MMO genre have probably taken one look at Star Citizen and said to themselves "Well... they have very advanced tech, even though things aren't going very well for them now... if we try to compete, its entirely possible that in a few years they'll be able to stomp us flat, so its safer for us to go into another genre, make a different type of game". I think that's ending. Its ending because Unreal is bridging the gap for these development houses. As a result, there's likely to be real competition in Star Citizen's space in a few years, not just Starfield, but actual MMOs from established MMO devs. MMOs like Mortal Exodus. And I'm not here to say that Mortal Exodus is going to kill Star Citizen, that would be insane. There's nothing known about Mortal Exodus right now, its vaporware, its a dream not a game. But I don't think Mortal Exodus is going to be the only game coming for Star Citizen's crown. So I think CIG needs to bite the bullet and actually make the game... a game. Its time to make the hard choices, and get content in... because if Star Citizen is in the same rough shape it is in now in say 3 years, CIG might find its star falling fast. Other companies aren't going to need 150 unique ship designs to compete if Star Citizen still has no end game. They aren't going to need a complete simulation with hundreds of thousands of simulated NPCs if they have a player driven economy. Other companies are going to be able to make something fun, something incredible with less effort in less time, not because CIG sucks, but because they'll be using newer, better tooling. Because their pricing model doesn't encourage spending excessive resources on ship building. Its time to deliver.
