I recently discovered this sim (also on steam) and I must say, it's really impressive. It's got ships, a persistent (!) 1:1 scale real time world and it takes forever to cross an ocean. So if there are any other enthousiasts about real time sailing and taking a long time to get somewhere, some citizens might actually love this. Still early access though, -and not very cheap- but I think it's quite entertaining already. When offline your ship keeps sailing, and you get e-mail notifications about the progress if you want to. All in all, for those interested, check it out!
