If S42 releases after Starfield, there will be comparisons. These comparisons will be fueled by every previous article and speculation surrounding the massive delays and investor time-sink into this community funded project. These comparisons will scrutinize every failing of S42 to measure up against the classical industry approach to a AAA game. Every time CR mentioned that SC was doing things "never done before", it will be held up to a magnifying glass and measured against the very same thing in Starfield. This game is going to make or break the public perception of CIG. After all the funding and now new offices, if S42 is perceived as a failure, this will have a huge negative impact on SC. Should S42 release after Starfield, I am fairly certain we're going to see more scope creep into S42 post-Starfield release. There is just no way around it. If this game fails to measure up in anyway, the media is going to have a field day with this. The thing I'm personally wrestling with is that I still have no idea what exactly S42 is supposed to be. Given the very limited insight I have into the actual game, my guess is that it is not Starfield. Whereas Starfield is a full blown RPG, it seems to me that S42 is more of a linear, narrative driven cinematic experience like a Naughty Dog game. If that's the case, then CIG needs to be very clear with it's promotional material so they can separate themselves from Starfield. And even if they are super-clear, comparisons will still be made. So while we, internally as a community will understand that many things are different in these games, the overarching narrative will not change. As it stands right now, Starfield is a direct competitor to not only S42 but also even the PU. It doesn't matter that it's single-player vs multiplayer. Public perception and by extension media outlets are going to further squash any goodwill CIG has attempted to build-up in recent years. So I guess all I'm saying is, I hope CIG is prepared to counter this with something that will show why this financing model is better and why this model for development was worthwhile. I honestly think CIG needs to create a mini-doc series on Netflix or something to build up a positive spin for their product-line.
