What do we want?.. SPACESHIPS When do we want them?.. NOW I was born in the 90s and as such I have been exposed to video games from a really early age. I had seen films like the Fifth Element and had previously seen interest in Warhammer 40K, a vast and technically minded tabletop game that gave me my first inklings into what it might be like to live in a futuristic space-faring society. Although grim and dark beyond that which a young teenager should be exposed, my interest in space combat became even more focused as I aged along with my video game counterparts. What I really wanted though, what I really needed, was spectacular. A dream of a true space simulation. One that I could play online with my friends and ultimately get lost in. That should be easy enough right? You think to yourself. This is true, there are loads of space combat games, but most are 2D, too dull and single player. I spent weeks and months looking for a viable option to satisfy my yearning. It didn't take me long however to stumble upon what I thought was the perfect match! Que, EVE online. ... And, quit EVE online. I tried other space sims too but non really..well non really had the fidelity or the depth I wanted. After all, nothing is deeper than space! Right? I like you, am a backer of Star Citizen and have been for a while. Seeing 3.0 come out and having played a few hours here and there it’s been great to see a ‘vertical slice’ of the game and what we can come to expect this year may just blow our socks off. However, and it’s a big HOWEVER, more of a ‘but’ really. I think there is one part of the game that is perhaps being neglected. A potential for Star Citizen to make use of properties it seems to have almost accidentally acquired. What am I talking about? I am talking, quite frankly, about horror! Or what I like to call, A Horrible Potential! Ever played Alien? As in the game version of Ridley Scott’s Alien? I did! It scared the wellies off me. If you haven’t played it here is some gameplay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU5JJraK7jQ Shipwrecks, darkly lit corners and spine tingling sound effects? It’s all there in Star Citizen. In fact it’s all better in Star Citizen. So why the neglect? With the introduction of our alien friends in distant patches I implore the creative decision makers at CIG to exploit this potential. Scare us! Give us a thrill, keep us on the edge of our seats! Give us a smart, alien AI as a nemesis! PLEASE!
