I've been watching that trainwreck of a game on twitch, I was going to try it but I am thankful for watching the streams. Basically, they advertise a game that can support 40,000 players on the server, and this is what everyone expected. But seeing how it works, you can see that Atlas can only support a common max player count. While I do not expect Star Citizen to support a thousand players in the same frame, we can take a look at how Atlas has done server meshing and gather some key takeaways from this. This is a good opportunity to share concerns and learn from their live build. On Atlas you basically have a bunch of 150 player capped islands connected to each other in a grid like fashion, and when travelling to another island, if that one is capped already, then you will see a red energy wave in the distance in the ocean telling you that you can not enter. We've also seen that for many straight days, people could not connect at all due to starter areas being population capped at all times. The biggest turn off for me in Atlas is the fact that you can have a base on an island, and if your enemy storms in with enough players to cap pop limit, you can send all the discord pings that you want for defense, but no one is coming into that server node. That is gamebreaking and unbalanced. You can rush the node with attackers or defenders to cap the player limit, there will be no epic fight. Many orgs in Star Citizen will be able to do this with ease. I assume that Star Citizen will have some similarities with the server meshing, that atlas uses to be able to have every player on the same megaserver. I also know there will be differences too! Atlas kind of gave me a preview of what it could look like. When I first learned how it worked in Atlas, I was pretty intrigued but it did not take long to see the ways that they did it wrong over there. I understand that you can easily mirror server node for major landing areas and the most populated spots. However, these concerns are more geared towards the org vs org aspect when we start having bases and such being built. I think this is a great opportunity to see where Atlas went wrong with their system, as they will surely have to adjust it overtime.
