There's a bunch of chatter about the Elite Dangerous Odyssey alpha and it being the SC killer. I don't think so, and wanted to share. Post I made on Reddit because it captures the essence of what I love about SC. Actually it barely scratches the surface, but here goes I get what Odyssey's doing makes it appear similar to SC (in some ways) but they'll never do what SC is trying to do. The only ones who think its a killer are clueless about what CIG and CR are doing. For starters SC isn't faking things (as much as a game can not fake things). It's more a sim and less an arcade style game. In elite, NMS, and other similar games, they're more arcade like, faking most things, which is way faster to develop, but is just a less immersive experience IMHO. For SC on the other hand, they're making a world sim, not really faking anything. It's way harder, but the end result is way more immersive. From gravity, physics and weather to material types not just impacting light, but also physical strength, durability, wear and tear, etc. For some people an arcade like experience is all you want, jump in, pew pew, satisfied. What draws me into SC is how in depth they're getting, and for me I'd rather wait for that, then play an 90's style game with a graphics uplift. That's just my opinion I was further chatting with a friend about how SC really shines with a large group. Someone piloting a constellation or carrack or kraken for that matter, others on turrets, others thwarting a boarding party, others doing repairs, and someone jumping in the snub fighter to further support the turrets. Just one solo player can't begin to experience the whole thing, nor can a few people in a small group. This is yet another example where elite is giving ground legs but do we think it'll ever do what I just described Then consider damage, systems sparking, catching fire. Having to vent an area, lower blast doors, Eva outside to repair something, sneak over to an enemy ship and plant an explosive charge on the hull Maybe we never see all this in SC. But I'm still excited for the future and still believe in the vision.
