“… I’m sorry for your loss. He will be missed. He saved us all you know.” <sniff> “ I know. Thank you. Thank you for everything” “It’s time to begin” -- Captain Vibley steps up to the podium and surveys the docking and cargo bay of the STS Sureal. Today it has been cleared out and cleaned to accommodate a small gathering seated in the center where a memorial service is taking place. “Thank you all for coming. We all have our reasons for being here today. However, the fact that we ‘are’ all here today is due to the actions of one person, “Michael ‘Greaser’ Turner”. “..Hehe ‘Greaser’, he hated that nickname. Any of you that knew him, knew that he was a bit of a germaphobe. A strange trait for a mechanic. No matter how grimy, or messy his work got, it was not done until he was satisfied that his work area was cleaned before he left. I remember that one day another crewmember decided to screw with him by thoroughly greasing up a crawl space after he had already gone in. Getting out was not easy, and when he eventually got out, he was covered head to toes in thick maintenance grease. The uncharacteristic fit of anger that he threw afterwards cemented his fate. He became known as ‘Greaser’ to the crew. Hell, He even came to me for months protesting and trying to get the name removed. I had to tell him that a nickname is earned and is a sign of respect. I cannot just change it. In fact, the more you struggle with it, the harder it will stick so get used to it. He also developed another reputation. He was one hell of a mechanic. He was unconventional and didn’t let little things like, “We don’t have a replacement part” deter him. He invented solutions, crafted workarounds, basically made things work. Which leads us to how we ended up here today. You all know that it was a Pirate that attacked us. What you do not know was that the damage we sustained was not from the Pirate ship itself. We were sabotaged from within. Apparently ‘Paul’... 'Yea, the guy NOT with us here today', was working with this pirate and had intended to knock out our life support systems. With us all dead the pirate ship would move in and take our cargo uncontested. Unfortunately for ‘Paul‘, he hadn’t counted on one of ‘Greaser’s’ modifications. While trying to sabotage the life support and mobility junction, it blew up, and blew out part of our hull. A Fitting end for ‘Paul’…that bastard. Unfortunately, that explosion also disabled us in space, and wrecked our life support. The pirate ship figured that this was part of ‘Paul’s’ plan and began to move in silently. “Christy Turner” who by now had jumped into the nearest turret, spotted him and cored him before he could raise his shields. Again, sorry for your loss Christy. By the way it was Christy who greased that crawl space. I remember the day that ‘Greaser’ stopped complaining about his name and instead asked me to marry the both of them. “That my boy, I can do”. Where was I?... Oh yes. So here we were disabled and our air leaking out into space. I activated our distress beacon but I knew that our air was running out fast. ‘Greaser’ donned an EVA suit and went out to see what he could do. What he reported was not good. The explosion blew out a good chunk of the tubing used to transport air through the ship at a junction point. He didn’t have enough material to fix it. He also knew that we were going to run out of air before help arrived. It didn’t look good. While we were contemplating our next actions, you all know what happened. Christy started screaming and jumped out of the turret and made a bee-line for the sealed off door to the damaged area. It took three of us to restrain her. ‘ By the way, John, how’s that black eye?’ [Christy interrupts]: We made eye contact Michael and I. He was staring at me in the turret. He knew we weren’t going to make it. He then nodded at me and I could see in his eyes what he was going to do. He took a few deep breaths then let it all out and started stripping off his EVA suit. There was nothing I could do… <sobbing>, There was nothing I could do… I never even got to tell him that I was pregnant with his daughter. I was going to surprise him on our anniversary. He never knew. Captain Vibley sighed heavily. “As a friend, Christy came to me to help with the planning and lead up to breaking the news. We were going to screw with him again. we never got the chance. When help finally did arrive, we recovered his body. He had somehow managed to use his EVA suit to make a patch by channeling air though the suit and creating air-tight tubing. His hand was still holding the sealing clamp when we found him. He gave his life to save us all.” Reaching down to grab plaque from the podium, “Following this memorial, this plaque will be permanently attached here in the cargo bay next to his office door. An identical one will also be placed on the bridge. It reads; In Memory of Michael Turner A.K.A: Greaser “Hero” Husband / Father He gave his life to save ours. Let us never forget.
