From the recent Nine Tails terrorist attack on Crusader, a new piece of technology became known to the public: the Identity Friend or Foe Inverter (IFFI). This was a key part of the so-called “Siege of Orison” that made dealing with the incident difficult. The events from the “Siege of Orison” sounds like a bad, repeated 21st century sci-fi video game plot, but that is what happened. The bad guys turned the good guys’ automated defenses on themselves. Disappointing that the UEE Advocacy and Crusader Industries were unsuccessful in combating this, and had to rely again on the efforts of CDF volunteers to resolve this horrific situation. Let’s take a look at what these devices are, and speculate the future of these devices. What do we know about the IFFI capabilities? Created 30 km radius no-fly zone. Prevented all ships by turning on automatic control to redirect approaching ships operating about 30 km near the IFFI, except for Crusader ships on the platforms and Nine Tails owned ships. Causes automated defense turrets to identify non-Nine Tails ships as hostiles, without needing to fully take control of the defensive systems. When the IFFI devices were offline the defense turrets targeted remaining Nine Tails ships still in the area. Note that Crusader Industries and their security were unable or unwilling to turn off the platform defense systems. Fits in and fully operational in a standard cargo container. All four IFFI devices were transported and activated inside standard cargo containers. Relatively small size, able to be easily transported and placed nearly anywhere. Or possibly integrate this technology into a ship. For example, consider Quantum Snare technology in the Mantis by RSI. What do we know about the origin of these IFFI devices? The four IFFIs used in the incident are seemingly identical. This suggests that these devices are not the result of Nine Tails experts hacking together a IFFI device in GrimHEX, but the devices coming from a more mature production line. The IFFIs used by Nine Tails in this incident were corporate products or made from commercial parts. Standard Class 4 - NP 494 - 1E Laser safety warning labels on the devices. Work Station 30082007 model used to control the devices. 00454 N0 002 triangle panels used for the external skin of the devices. The UEE Advocacy and/or Crusader Industries knew about the IFFI devices and their possible locations before it was public knowledge. The UEE Advocacy Special Agent in Charge Rowena Dulli briefed CDF volunteers responding to the incident informing them of the IFFI devices. Possible explanation of UEE Advocacy and/or Crusader Industries having prior intelligence on Nine Tail and IFFI devices. So I have to ask… Who’s selling these IFFI, and when can I buy a couple? As a private citizen, I would like to own this portable no-fly zone creating device. I would love to add this alongside my city block leveling A2.
