I was re-reading the Star Citizen timeline and thinking about the significance of the RSI Quantum Drive and how it would affect humanity. To help put things in perspective I looked up a few facts about actual capabilities. The fastest manned vehicle made to date travels at around 11300 KM/h or 0.000,01C The fasted unmanned vehicle made to date travels at around 48300 KM/h or 0.000,04C. It took 10 years for it to reach Pluto from Earth. Light from the sun takes about 4.5 hours to reach Pluto. It took Apollo 11 76 hours to reach the moon (or about 3 days). For comparison the first RSI Q-Drive in Star Citizen (allowing 0.01 C) would allow a ship to get to Pluto in about 450 hours or a bit less than 19 days. This makes manned exploration of the whole solar system possible. It beats the travel times between points for the sailing ships that were used by the Europeans to explore and colonize the Earth. The 2nd RSI Q-Drive which allowed for a maximum speed of 0.1C would have allowed Earth-Pluto travel in just under 2 days. That would make most interplanetary transport of goods on par with commercial air-travel today. For comparison, a commercial flight from New York to Australia takes almost 22 hours. Assuming the power could be maintained for the entire trip the Artemis (first manned interplanetary ship in Star Citizen) would have made it to Alpha Centauri (if that was their destination) in about 50 years. Humanity has never attempted anything like that in recorded history. Even early colonization of Australia from Europe in sailing ships had travel time measured in months, not decades. The more interesting (and concerning) aspect of the Artemis project is that there was not enough time for unmanned probes to be sent and to return data between the time the Q-Drive was invented and when the Artemis launched. That means those colonists were going somewhere without having as much detail about their destination as we have of Mars today.
