As an Idris owner I am very invested in how the ship looks and performs. I believe this is the first time we have seen the full Bridge of the Idris and I have to say I was extremely disappointed. In short, it is much to spread out. It looks as if some one placed an office chair in the middle of a gymnasium for the Captain to sit in. He cannot effectively communicate with any one manning any of the stations there nor can he see what anyone is doing at any of the stations. Currently, if the Captain wants to have a command heard he has to yell. If he wants to see what is going on at a station, he has to run over, and visa versa. When the ship is in combat and there is loads of noise and confusion, when commands must be heard, understood and executed quickly, when information needs to be presented in real time, there is no way the Captain can be effective sitting in that chair. This just simply was not the case in the concept images we saw a while back. Position / Purpose - If you look at how the Enterprise from Star Trek Captain's chair is position it is raised above the Navigators stations so he can shoulder surf them and see what they are doing it is position centrally so the Captain can easily swivel around and give commands to all persons at each station: navigation communication, engineering, science/scanners, etc. and see what they are doing. It has controls, buttons, in the modern era it could have consoles, monitor screens. Even holographic ones to provide the Captain a central command center which feeds him info from all around the ship to help he monitor and make decisions. height the bridge should take a note from modern movie theaters. Everyone needs to see the view up front, so the floor raises further back you go. The Captain should have a centrally good view of all work stations and persons at them, as well as the views out of the ship. The chair - It's just a chair. It should be loaded up with buttons, controls, and consoles. It should have the ability to provide the captain with info from all/any of the other stations. This would make it much bigger and have function beyond a place to sit. Animation - the animation looks like the same one used for the Starfarer Captain's chair. I get that CIG is trying to create the jaunty Captain Kirk "Lean to one side" sitting position. This works on the Starfarer and the Enterprise from Star Trek, as the chairs are much bigger as have all sorts of controls and buttons. But the Idirs chair is shockingly anemic, and seems to lack any function other than provide an awkward place to sit. And the captain really has nothing to lean on. The easy fix, add a beefy chair with controls and monitors. The Floor and The View - why is there so much floor in front of the captain's chair? Why not make the floor is in front of it glass to provide better visuals. There is no reason to have walking space there. There is just way too much floor space which could be glass if you moved all stations closer together. This would provide better visuals outside for the crew and better communication. How to fix it. In short, move all the stations closer. There is a Pilot and Co-pilot station in front of the captain's chair to the front left and front right, bring them closer together. There were two stations the the captains direct left and right (engineering and communications?) whatever they are, bring them closer too. Raise the captains chair to sit on a level that is taller that the pilot and co pilot, so he can shoulder surf their controls and see out over their heads. This can also be the same level for the other 2 stations. Remove floor and add glass in places in front and on the sides that make it possible for the bridge crew to have and excellent view of what is around them. Add some hand rails in logical places to keep the crew from bouncing around when the ship is maneuvering. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on how the ship felt for you. What would you fix if anything?
