In all the drama about Luxury being useless in a video game, I would just like to remind everyone of something: The devs have said that luxury ships will affect your reputation in the game. Landing in one will get you access to certain areas or meetings with certain high ranking officials, rich business men, or important mission givers that other ships will not afford you. That ALONE is worth the price to me. Many people seem to have missed or forgotten this point. In an open world game like this, "treasure rooms" and "secret missions" are a HUGE part of the fun. Having to earn access to the VIP lounge by what you wear, what you drive, and consequently who you know is a HUGE game mechanic that I absolutely LOVE! The idea of having to hob-knob through the upper echelons of NPC society in order to get close to that epicly hard to meet mission giver sounds fantastic to me. Some of you may get off on earning your way into a notorious criminal syndicate by working your way up the pirate ladder. This is the same thing, except the money, luxury, and power at stake is... literally everything the empire has to offer. I just wanted everyone to remember that "luxury" is not useless in Star Citizen. It is a reputation buff that you have to pay for... it just so happens to look good too  Edit: Also remember that while Chris has said that the highest rewards in the game will be in the most dangerous areas, as in on the front lines of the Vanduul or in PVP, the rewards in "Civilized Space" will be much lower. In the Genesis Starliner passenger transport explainer, we see that you have to move up the reputation ladder, move more people, or take on more dangerous routes to make more money. I suspect that VIP transport and other VIP missions will yield some of the highest reward / risk ratios in the game. This is because the risk involved in flying around civilized space is very low, while the rewards are still decent (though not extravagant). Obviously we do not know quite how this will be balanced, but it has been stated in several places that luxury items (including ships and clothing) will effect certain aspects of your reputation, and reputation in all aspects of game play directly effects what jobs are available and how much you are paid for them. I simply wanted to remind everyone of this fact, and to spark constructive conversation about what we want out of this "luxury" reputation mechanic.
